Link Crew Final

Considering all that you have done as a Link Leader... What’s next? Literally, what are you going to do with the skills you have started to develop through this semester with Link Crew? DO NOT REFLECT—LOOK FORWARD. Be as specific as possible with your plans for leadership in your future.

  1. Since the spring of last year I have been a positive influence in my younger peers lives, the freshman. It has been truly a learning and growing experience. Through out this program I have learned where I stand as a person and how I can improve myself to better serve others through my leadership. By exploring the three topics in focus this semester:balance, academics, and involvement; I ferreted out where my strong abilities lie, as well as, my weakest links. Then, through my freshman contact tried to enrich the time we had together by not only sharing with them what I knew but also continuing to better myself with what they could teach me and to remind them that we are continually revising ourselves, never a final draft. With this amazing LINK crew experience under my belt I am looking forward to other opportunities that will push me as a leader moving forward. Next year in one of my extra curricular activities I am hoping to assume more of a leadership role. Using what I have learned about how to reach others that might not be conducive to help at first, how to stay persistent, what it means to be a true role model, and the mentality that needs to be had of truly wanting to make a difference in people's lives. With only a few years of high school left before me I truly want to instill the ideals of Arapahoe in the classes I will be leaving behind when I go, so they can carry on the tradition. Arapahoe has always been a safe haven where in working together and helping each other we thrive in our lives. This is so crucial in succeeding in everything you do, and I want to make sure I exemplify this to the best of my ability and inspire others to be there for each other; by continuing to cultivating this amazing community here at Arapahoe. During the academic portion of the LINK crew study area I grew very close to one of my freshman. She was struggling in a lot of her classes and once she knew I was an open door for any help she needed there was no hesitation in her ask for assistance every week. Either through study sessions or phone calls we would connect and any question she had I was there to help her work through the rough patches. Together we found that often enough, the information was there inside her head, all she really needed was a visual to drive the knowledge home and that I loved every time the study session would end and she would say, "Thank you, that makes so much more sense now." I have found that I treasure one-on-one time and tutoring per say. I have decided to assume a tutoring role in the science office once a week after school having found my knack for helping others, and the pure self fulfillment I receive by being a part of others harnessing their potential and letter shine their inner greatness.A few more year down the road, I am looking forward to holding a position where I am collaborating with other people, a leader in one retrospect but forever a student in another. Leadership means something different to me now. Before it was simply being the first foot steps to which others follow in suite. After my LINK crew experience I have come to find that it is the relationships between the leader and who they are guiding, it is having the humbleness to evolve as a leader acknowledging that their is always a better versions of yourself to blossom into, and it is sharing the wisdom you have acquired with others, that genuinely matters. I never want to stop being a leader because of how much I want to give of myself for others, but also because I never want to be stagnant in my learning whether it be from others, in school,or from life in general. Looking forward into a potential career, I am enthralled by the fusion of bio-engineering and life sciences/health care profession where the practice is always evolving, changing, improving. Where there is always something new to discover (engineering part) and a way to share it with others ( healthcare portion). LINK crew has been an experience of a lifetime.

  2. Link Crew has taught me so many lessons. Although I feel like my Link Crew partner and I did a good job, there are always aspects of leadership that can be improved upon. However, through the three areas of relationships, involvement, and academics, I have acquired leadership skills that will stay with me for the rest of my life.
On orientation day, I met my thirteen freshmen that influenced my life in so many ways. For the first time, I was a role model, which gave me added pressure to behave in a responsible manner and strive to be an example for younger students. One leadership skill that I obtained through my relationships with my students was diligence in maintaining a relationship. Although it wasn’t always easy, I tried to keep in touch with my freshmen so that I could remain a part of their life. Also, since I am involved in three sports at Arapahoe, it is often difficult to keep in touch with my teammates and foster relationships with my friends and family when I am so busy. However, Link Crew has taught me to balance my time between extracurricular activities, academics and relationships. I will use this skill in the future as a leader on my athletic teams. I also plan to apply for Link Crew again next year, and having learned my lesson about how difficult it can be to keep in touch with my freshmen, I will be able to adjust my schedule to better suit their needs. It seems a little crazy that anyone would look to me as a leader and trust me to the extent that I trusted my Link Crew leaders as a freshman, but through Link Crew I have learned the important leadership skill of time management in maintaining a relationship, which can be applicable to athletics, my faith and spending time with friends and family.

  3. This year, I have had many opportunities to practice and develop leadership. Since, the beginning of the year, I have more confidence and I have become a better leader. A good leader has passion, respect, honesty, focus and dedication. With the skills that I have developed, I plan on helping the community and helping my peers
In the future, I am going to volunteer my time to a program that needs help. Link Crew helped me develop the skills I need to succeed in doing so. I have learned that signing up does not mean that I am free to do whatever I want, because that is incorrect; signing up is committing oneself to the actions of the group, not just the words. I have learned that dedication and commitment can be gratifying. For example, during the PLC late start day study session, there was a kid struggling with Spanish. I went up to him confidently and asked him if he needed help and he said he did. I sat with him for almost two hours and worked with him on his Spanish vocabulary, but by the end of it, he remembered most of them. This was a great moment for me because I realized that I helped a student succeed and gave him study tips for succeeding with his other classes. I also realized that many people will not ask for help because many are as timid as I was as a freshmen. It is through these experiences that I have learned to confidently ask a person if he needs help and I have learned that committing and dedicating myself to something I care about can be gratifying. Another skill Link Crew has helped me develop is focus. I have learned to set my priorities and to do everything else according to that. I have focused on helping freshmen but at the same time maintaining my grades and a good leader is able to do both well. With the skills I have developed, I will start volunteering more of my time to help the community, maybe at Littleton Hospital or Denver Dumb Friends League.
Through Link Crew, I have developed a passion for helping others. This passion is important to have because I learned that passion motivates me to give all I have into that program, whether it be volunteering or Link Crew, because helping others is what I care about. Helping my peers is a step I can take with my leadership. I am confident enough now that I can go up to someone who seems to be struggling and ask him if he needs help. I care about the successes, failures, and problems of my peers and I want them to know that I am here to help. I can do that through studying with them, or even introducing myself in order to make new friends. Link Crew has taught me that confidence and passion create a great leader who is willing the help others because he likes to.
Overall, Link Crew has given me many opportunities to help others and I value the skills I have learned. I have learned that I should participate in something I have a passion for because that can motivate me to do an excellent job because it is something I truly care about, rather than just doing something just to get into a good college or get a good grade. Leadership best when one goes out and tries to help others because he wants to, it does not thrive when he is forced to help otherwise he gets a bad grade. So, in my future, I will be giving myself more opportunities to help people and be a leader, without being graded for it. I value the opportunities Link Crew has given me to become more confident and become a better leader through helping me focus, be respectful to everyone, and develop a passion for helping others.

  4. Overall, academic leadership is difficult to achieve. It involves persistent study, dedication and focus. I learned in Link Crew that time-management is essential for my present life and later in life when I’m in college or a responsible adult in the workplace. Most importantly, the leadership quality that I learned in the field of academics was on the PLC day when I had the privilege of helping a struggling student. I realized that even though my grades mean so much to me and the topics in my classes come easily enough, there are students who are trying but struggle. One of my freshman also had no motivation to do his homework or succeed, and therefore had terrible grades. As a leader, it is often difficult to see those who I cared about struggling or throwing away their high school career their freshman year, but all I could do was try to continue to foster our relationship and attempt to motivate them. The biggest leadership qualities that I took away from the Link Crew experience through the academic lense were patience and pride. In positions of leadership in the future, like Link Crew next year (assuming I am re-accepted), athletic teams, and even being a mom, I will need to be patient with shortcomings and proud of achievements.
Link Crew has had a very positive influence on my life. I have improved various aspects of my leadership abilities, but the most important growth that I have made has been through patience, pride, maintaining relationships, time-management, and personal reflection. in the future as a senior in highschool, an athletic leader, a continuing Link Crew leader, a responsible student in college, and as a parent, these leadership qualities will be essential in my life as a future role model.
